Lieutenant General Sir Edwin Alfred Hervey Alderson (1859-1927) in command of the Canadian Expeditionary Force until the calamitous battle of St Eloi in April 1916, which caused his transferral to the largely symbolic post of Inspector-General of Canadian Forces Overseas.
